Principal

Dr. Patrina Jenkins

Dr. Jenkins comes to Syms from Captain John Smith Elementary School for the past four years. Prior to Smith, she served as an assistant principal at Hampton High School, Bethel High School, Jones Magnet Middle School, Spratley Middle School and Barron Elementary School. She began her teaching career in Newport News City Public Schools where she served as a middle school teacher for 14 years.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from the Old Dominion University, and her master’s in education from Regent University. Jenkins further pursued her education and earned her Ed.S. in leadership and supervision from The George Washington University and her doctorate in leadership and administration from Nova Southeastern University.


Assistant Principal- 6th Grade

William Taylor

William Taylor joins us from Portsmouth Public Schools where he has served as an assistant principal for the past thirteen years at the elementary, middle, and high school level. He began his educational career as a middle school history teacher in Lawrenceville, Virginia and then taught middle school history and was the AVID coordinator for Newport News Public Schools before going into administration.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from St. Paul’s College and his master’s in educational leadership from Cambridge College.

Assistant Principal- 7th Grade

Gordon Blair

Gordon Blair joins our team from Newport News Juvenile Detention School where he served the past ten years as a high school English teacher. Prior to serving the students and staff in Newport News Public Schools, he was an alternative pathways program instructor and high school English teacher in Wilmington, North Carolina; an English teacher in Southport, North Carolina; and a middle school language arts teacher for Norfolk Public Schools.

He earned both his Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and master’s in educational leadership from Old Dominion University.

Assistant Principal-8th Grade

Carla Montgomery

Carla Montgomery comes to us from Lindsay Middle School where she served as an assistant principal for the past five years. She began her teaching career in Isle of Wight as a sixth grade science teacher before she joined the Hampton City Schools team in 2005 as a science teacher and then a behavior specialist, both at Lindsay Middle School. Mrs. Montgomery has also served as an intensive in-home mental health counselor for six years for New Seasons Clinical Services in Hampton.

She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University and her master’s in educational leadership from Grand Canyon University.
